KCRW is Southern California’s flagship National Public Radio affiliate, featuring an independent mix of music, news, and cultural programming supported by more than 55,000 member/subscribers. The non-commercial broadcast signal is simulcast on the web at KCRW.com, along with an all-music and an all-news stream and an extensive selection of podcasts. KCRW was a pioneer in online radio, they’ve been live streaming on the web since 1995.  The station has an international listening audience, and is widely considered one of the most influential independent music radio stations around the globe.

KCRW has used the Plone CMS for 7 years and for the last 6 the website has been running on Plone version 2.5, which has been increasingly showing its age. Over a year ago KCRW embarked on a project to redesign the site and upgrade the software and functionality, and they selected Jazkarta for the technical implementation. Site features include extensive multimedia support, tiled layouts, Plone+Salesforce integration, and a responsive design by Hard Candy Shell that looks great on phones, tablets, and desktops.

Modular tiled layouts are central to both the aesthetics and functionality of the site. We used Plone portlets and collective.cover tiles with KCRW's custom content types (shows, episodes, segments) to build a system of standard layouts available as page fragments. Many custom tiles and portlets are based on the same underlying views so editors can easily reuse content fragments throughout the site.

The Mountaineers is the premier outdoor education non-profit in the Pacific Northwest, with 10,000+ members and over a thousand volunteers leading hundreds of activities and classes in hiking, backpacking, climbing, skiing, sea kayaking and more. Their old website had become outdated along with their processes and technology, so the organization embarked on a major upgrade project. The goal was a beautiful, modern, and engaging website that made it easy for leaders to create new activities, for volunteers to volunteer, for members to sign up and donate, and for everyone to find what they’re looking for in The Mountaineers’ vast portfolio of outdoor knowledge.

After kicking the tires on lots of systems, The Mountaineers settled on  Plone, the leading open source enterprise CMS, and Salesforce.com, the leading software-as-a-service CRM. Plone+Salesforce is a great combination for non-profits because of extensive integration possibilities and deep license discounts. For The Mountaineers, it meant that their oceans of data about members, courses, activities, rosters, routes and places, committees, etc. could be seemlessly synchronized between these two best-of-breed systems.

Implementation of the site was a partnership between Jazkarta doing the Plone front end and Percolator Consulting, engagement strategists and CRM experts, doing the Salesforce backend. Site features include maps, faceted search, complex landing pages, lightweight e-commerce, and extensive use of groups for granular control of editing permissions. We developed asynchronous Plone-Salesforce integration using Celery message queues, and created a new Plone add-on, collective.workspace, which provides roster functionality, allowing each participant’s role, registration, and other information to be managed.

NAOCC was established by the Smithsonian and the United States Botanic Garden to ensure the survival of all native orchid species in the U.S. and Canada, more than half of which are endangered or threatened somewhere in their native range. A key component of NAOCC's mission is to develop an interactive website that provides the public with a mechanism to identify and learn everything that is known about our native orchids.

When NAOCC staff saw a demonstration of the New England Wild Flower Society's Go Botany site they decided their new orchid website should work the same way. The NSF-funded Go Botany code is open source, but NAOCC needed to make a few changes and apply a new design. Because of Jazkarta's expertise in both botany and Go Botany - we had led the original Go Botany development effort - we were the obvious choice to develop Go Orchids.

The project was a three way collaboration: Fresh Tilled Soil created a design for the site (as they had for Go Botany), Jazkarta applied the design and added new functionality, and NEWFS provided botanical data and technical assistance. Working together, we were able to pull most of the NAOCC changes and improvements into the Go Botany code base where they can benefit all future Go Botany implementations. The most notable new feature is a responsive design for the Simple Key that works beautifully on mobile devices.

Since 2010, MassChallenge has helped early stage entrepreneurs through their annual global accelerator program. Every year this non-profit organization holds a startup competition in which over 1,000 aspiring companies from around the world vie for $1,000,000 in cash awards with no strings attached. The 125 finalists participate in a 4 month startup accelerator that provides mentoring, training, legal advice, and an exciting, supportive community in 27,000 square feet of office space overlooking the Boston waterfront.

The final round of judging to select 10-20 winners from the 125 finalists is held at the end of September. For the 2012 final round judging, MassChallenge engaged Jazkarta to create a Django application that would support their online judging process. Their prior application had outlived its useful life and MassChallenge decided to try out the Python platform. Creating a production application that would support 100 judges giving feedback and voting on pitches from 125 companies within a short development cycle was a test both of Django and of Jazkarta's agile development process.

Both passed with flying colors. The new judging application worked without a hitch, and its performance was much better than the prior app. It was easy to integrate a clean, responsive Twitter Bootstrap design, and django-registration let us get the system users up and running quickly. The MassChallenge project owner loved working with Jazkarta's top notch developers - he participated actively in the development process, providing needed feedback at every standup meeting and learning Django tips and tricks along the way. Building on our success, in 2013 we extended the system to run the entire application, mentoring, and judging process for the accelerator program, including integration with the Salesforce.com CRM.

The Innocence Project is a non-profit legal clinic dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through DNA testing, and to reforming the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice. More than 300 wrongfully convicted inmates have been exonerated through the Innocence Project's work.

The Innocence Project raises funds online to support their mission, and for that they have created a standalone donation system which is built on Plone and Salesforce.com. A robust integration of these two systems has existed for years, but the Innocence Project raised it to a new level by creating an open source Plone plugin, collective.salesforce.fundraising, that provides functionality for online donations, personal fundraising, campaign timelines and goals, and social login and sharing.

Jazkarta helped  the Innocence Project finish collective.salesforce.fundraising and extend it with personal fundraising features, including the ability for individuals to set themselves up as fundraisers under an umbrella campaign. This is a compelling addition to the Plone-Salesforce integration package, putting it head and shoulders above many of the other solutions available to non-profits - both in capabilities and price. Plone, collective.salesforce.fundraising, and all the other Salesforce plugins have no licensing fees, and thanks to the Salesforce Foundation's Power of Us program, Salesforce.com is very inexpensive for non-profits.

Bozeman, Montana

http://www.mercurycsc.com/

MercuryCSC is a creative communications agency specializing in outdoor brands and travel destinations. They excel at providing brand-building services for an audience that doesn't appreciate typical advertising and marketing approaches. Mercury's work for the Montana Office of Tourism - awarded a Silver Effie in 2011 - has been widely recognized as one of the most effective and innovative examples of tourism marketing in the US.

As part of that work Mercury created the Get Lost brand, tapping into the enthusiasm of Montana residents and visitors. The campaign included a bumper sticker which went viral across the state, and a website - GetLostMT.com - where people can share their favorite Montana places, stories, and trips. Sites like Yelp or Trip Advisor do a good job of crowd sourcing reviews, but they don't cover the little guys in a rural state like Montana very well. The Get Lost site fills that need, and it also provides "trip ideas" to the offbeat and out-of-the-way spots that appeal to its target audience: geotravelers, people who appreciate authenticity and value experiences over stuff.

Mercury turned to Jazkarta for assistance with the Get Lost mobile app because of our Django expertise and our agile approach. We turned their mockups into user stories which were implemented in a series of one week iterations. GetLostMT.com was already a Django site; to support the app we added a backend API based on the Tastypie webservice framework, and improved the location services by adding GeoDjango. We developed iOS and Android mobile apps using the PhoneGap framework with jQuery Mobile, which allowed us to keep the code base as platform neutral as possible. We met some unexpected challenges along the way, but constant attention to priorities ensured that the client was happy with the end result.

Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, in Washington, DC, is an institute of Harvard University dedicated to supporting scholarship internationally in Byzantine, Garden and Landscape, and Pre-Columbian studies through fellowships, meetings, exhibitions, and publications. Located in Georgetown and bequeathed by Robert Woods Bliss and Mildred Barnes Bliss, Dumbarton Oaks welcomes scholars to consult its books, images, and objects, and the public to visit its garden, museum, and music room for lectures and concerts.

Dumbarton Oaks chose Jazkarta for an extensive project that started with replacing their outdated, static HTML website with the Plone content management system. We migrated hundreds of pages to Plone using Funnelweb and then added custom functionality to make their unique collections of Byzantine Seals and Rare Books available to researchers around the world. All content is geocoded and has extensive metadata, making it possible to create rich displays of dynamic content collections on maps (using the Maps package) or in faceted search (using eea.facetednavigation). Our design partners Might & Main created a beautiful new design for the site reflecting the many facets of the institution, which we applied to the site using Plone's built in Diazo theming tool.

As part of the project, Dumbarton Oaks funded the development of a new open source Plone add on for online exhibits: collective.exhibit. It provides content types and navigation for creating multi-section exhibits from content items that are already on a site. For Dumbarton Oaks, this includes rare books, Byzantine seals, and images, but the package can be configured to use the content types on any Plone site. We also created collective.zoomit for panning and zooming large images and collective.timelines for making timelines out of Plone content.

Founded in 1925, the University of Minnesota Press (UMP) is among the most distinctive American university presses, with an international reputation for publishing boundary-breaking and intellectually rigorous work. In addition to its innovative editorial program in the humanities and social sciences, UMP publishes the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), the most widely used objective tests of personality in the world.

UMP recognized that their aging static HTML website was no longer meeting the needs of its readers and didn't reflect their voice as a leading publisher of innovative books and journals. Jazkarta was hired to help UMP overhaul the site with more dynamic search functionality and a new design. One of the first tasks was to migrate thousands of books and journals records from a Filemaker Pro database to the Plone CMS using Transmogrifier.

With help from our design partner Might & Main, we gave the site a fresh, colorful look-n-feel that better reflected the UMP brand and identity. We used the new Diazo theming tool to seamlessly integrate the design provided by Might & Main into the Plone site. The explore section of the site provides a unique faceted search experience to easily browse through the thousands of book titles in the UMP catalog. This search interface is powered by the eea.facetednavigation plugin.

The New England Wild Flower Society has been awarded an NSF grant to develop an innovative online flora of New England - the first comprehensive update of our knowledge of the region’s plants in 25 years. This multi-year project has many deliverables, but the overarching goal is to develop radical new web-based tools to teach botany and plant identification that will pique curiosity and spur learning about plants among a whole new generation of citizen scientists. It will engage them, through their fascination with technology, to go outside and grow their fascination with the natural world.

Because of our unique knowledge of both technology and botany, Jazkarta was engaged to lead the development effort. The multi-faceted project offers several plant identification tools, extensive photographs and information about the region's plants, learning aids for students and teachers, and a social feature called PlantShare that stimulates  learning and discussion.

The technology components used on this project included Django, PostgreSQL with PostGIS, Solr, and the Dojo Javascript toolkit. For in-depth information, see our Go Botany! blog post.
