Minneapolis, Minnesota

http://www.upress.umn.edu

Founded in 1925, the University of Minnesota Press (UMP) is among the most distinctive American university presses, with an international reputation for publishing boundary-breaking and intellectually rigorous work. The University of Minnesota Press is recognized internationally for its innovative editorial program in the humanities and social sciences and as publisher of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), the most widely used objective tests of personality in the world.

UMP recognized that their aging static HTML website was no longer meeting the needs of its readers and didn't reflect their voice as a leading publisher of innovative books and journals. Jazkarta was hired to help UMP overhaul the site with more dynamic search functionality and a new design. One of the first tasks was to migrate thousands of books and journals records from a Filemaker Pro database to the Plone CMS using Transmogrifier.

With help from our design partner Forge Brands, we gave the site a fresh, colorful look-n-feel that better reflected the UMP brand and identity. We used the new Diazo theming tool to seamlessly integrate the design provided by Forge Brands into the Plone site. The explore section of the site provides a unique faceted search experience to easily browse through the thousands of book titles in the UMP catalog. This search interface is powered by the eea.facetednavigation plugin.

CloudLock is a cloud data protection company that enables control of data while gaining the collaboration and cost savings benefits of the cloud. CloudLock's enterprise-class products are directly integrated with cloud application providers and are immediately available at a fraction of the cost.

Jazkarta was hired to build from scratch a tool to scan a company's Google Docs repository, and provide reports on potential security vulnerabilities. This tool ended up being so successful, that CloudLock (named Aprigo at the time) pivoted the entire company to focus on this one product.

We recommended using Django and Python on top of Google App Engine, and shepherded CloudLock through the various limitations of Google App Engine, to build an extremely scalable and successful SaaS product.

Upwardly Global's mission is to eliminate employment barriers for skilled immigrants and refugees and integrate this population into the professional U.S. workforce. Upwardly Global creates employer partnerships that benefit from access to the 1.5 million college-educated immigrants. They also provide customized training and support for these new Americans to give them an equal opportunity to find and secure skill appropriate opportunities and achieve their full economic potential in the U.S.

The Upwardly Global website provided information about the organization, their services and opportunities to get involved, but needed an overhaul with the goal to increase the impact of their mission of eliminating barriers to workplace entry for immigrant and refugee professionals.

Jazkarta helped upwardly global implement a new website design and migrate all content to a Plone-based content management system (CMS), that made it easy for staff to add new content to the website. We used PloneFormGen to make it easy for them to make forms for site visitors to request more information, and we connected their website to Salesforce to integrate some information on the public web pages with their Salesforce database, including job seeker and volunteer applications, event calendars, event registration forms and online surveys.

Oxfam America is committed to creating lasting solutions to global poverty, hunger, and social injustice. Jazkarta helped build the current Oxfam America website, which continues the organization's history of using Plone for its web presence.

Along with a complete redesign, the website was migrated from Plone 2.5 to Plone 3, and more recently to Plone 4. We incorporated Google Maps using the Maps add-on to create content that places Oxfam's issues in a global context. The ImageEditor add-on allows staff to easily edit images right in Plone. In the spirit of giving back to the community, this project produced improvements to both the collective.flowplayer and collective.formcriteria tools.

The New England Wild Flower Society has been awarded an NSF grant to develop an online flora of New England - the first comprehensive update of our knowledge of the region’s plants in 25 years. The project is intended to pique curiosity and spur learning about plants among a whole new generation of users. It will engage them, through their fascination with technology, to go outside and grow their fascination with the natural world.

Because of our unique knowledge of both technology and botany, Jazkarta was engaged to lead the development effort. The multi-faceted project offers several plant identification keys, extensive photographs and information about all the region's plants, learning aids for students and teachers, and a social feature called MyPlants that stimulates  learning and discussion.

The technology components include Django, Python, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, and Solr.

Serving residents to the west of Calgary, Rocky View Schools has over 16,000 students in grades K-12. It is the sixth largest school district in Alberta, with more than 1000 teaching and 700 support staff. On the first day of school, when all those teachers log in and start editing, their web content management system takes quite a beating.

Rocky View Schools chose the open source Plone CMS because it offered them the enterprise-level security and user management features they needed, with no licensing costs attached. When their deployment grew to over 50 sites and began to experience performance issues, they turned to Jazkarta, a Boston-based open source technology consultancy. Jazkarta performed a fixed price performance assessment and then implemented many of its recommendations. More recently, we have migrated the sites to Plone 4 to get further performance benefits. The result: a successful first day of school.

It supports the composition of "profiles" tracing connections among resources, and the saving and sharing of exportable lists. Jazkarta built the Media Research Hub as the first of a network of thematic SSRC Research Hubs, and the AIDS, Security and Conflict Research HubHurricane Katrina Research Hub and China Research Hub followed shortly after.

UNICEF is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. The Our Stories project helps people share the stories of their lives, no matter where they live or how their stories unfold.

Jazkarta was brought on board to assist with the technical implementation and development of the Our Stories site. The site features several ways for youth to tell their story: uploading a video, recording a video or audio using their computer's webcam, dialing a phone number and leaving a voicemail message or sending a text message. The stories are collected on the site, tagged with metadata and displayed on a Google Map. The technology used to build this site was Django and the Red 5 open source Flash media server that handles the video and audio streaming.
