Alexander Limi and Kamal Gill discuss calendar mockups

Together with the stellar team from Burning Man, Nate Aune helped organize the Plone calendaring sprint which took place Dec. 2-5 in San Francisco. The goal of the sprint was to improve the calendaring features of Plone.

There were over 15 developers from the Bay Area who participated as well as remote sprinters Sidnei da Silva from Brazil and Rocky Burt from Canada.

After a hearty recommendation from Alan Runyan (co-founder of Plone), we jumped into developing CalPlone, a product based on CalCore and CalZope from Nuxeo. But after digging into the code, we discovered that it was going to be more work than we had expected.

While we were not successful in building a fully functional CalPlone product, we had limited success in making CalPlone an installable Plone product. The CalPlone development efforts will resume in January after the holidays.

Instead of spending too much time pulling our hair out with CalPlone, we instead focused our efforts on developing CalViews, a simple product to provide:

  • month, week and day views for displaying a folder of events (Kamal came up with some excellent mockups)
  • make these views selectable from the Display menu and from the document actions
  • publish from iCal to a normal Plone folderĀ  (using Sidnei's Marshall and Calendaring products)
