The University of Minnesota Press had big ideas about what they wanted their website to do, but a budget that common wisdom would judge too modest for those aspirations. Sally and Alec Mitchell describe how Jazkarta was able to create the site that UMP dreamed of within their budget constraints using Plone.

In other projects, we've steered the customer to use one of the Python web application frameworks such as Django or Pyramid, and we and the customer have been pleased with the results.

The Future of Search in Plone

Sally provides an information retrieval tutorial and discusses the questions: What does Solr bring to Plone? Should Solr become part of Plone core?

From the beginning, the Zope Catalog has provided Plone with out-of-the-box content search - an important feature not found in all open source content management systems. However, search engine technology has been racing ahead and user expectations of what search should do have been changing. At the same time, search engines have gone from premium enterprise product to cheap commodity. The most important search engine worth considering these days is open source: Lucene/Solr. Several add-on products exist that integrate Solr with Plone, and interest in this technology is growing.

These slides include conclusions from the conference discussion.

Sally describes Jazkarta's approach to managing a Plone website development project in an agile fashion, with a part time, distributed team. Topics include roles, scheduling, estimation, and project management tools.

At Jazkarta, our Plone projects typically consist of a mix of custom functionality and theming. The client's budget is usually fixed and their requirements are imperfectly defined at the start of the project. This cries out for an agile, iterative approach, however our development environment is not what most agile experts would recommend. No one is co-located - our clients are remote and our developers are distributed, and they are not working full time on a single project.

The mission of the non-profit organization Bioneers is to provide environmental education and social connectivity through conferences, radio and television programs, books, and online materials. They engaged Jazkarta to build a file asset server based on Plone to help them organize, capture, and store multimedia and textual content. This project led us to make innovations in Plone's handling of massive multimedia files.

We developed a product that bypasses Plone and Zope and lets the web server front end handle large files directly - thereby avoiding the problem of stalling a Zope thread while hundreds of megabytes are being transferred. Uploads are handled within Apache by ModPorter, or alternatively the user can transfer files to an incoming area using their favorite FTP client. For downloads the web server directly serves the file content from ZODB blob storage after Plone has performed security checking. Versioning of large files is handled outside of CMFEditions, and copies are made only when necessary.

To make sense of the large number of image variants, we also created a way for Bioneers staff to designate a source image and record what other images are derived from it. We added image thumbnails to the default CMFEditions history view, and using jQuery provided lightbox behaviour so users can see relationships at a glance.
